Ali Babacan’s Visit to Singapore 2012

Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs paid a visit to Singapore, where he met with President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Deputy Prime Minister Taharman Shanmugaratnam, Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam and Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang. Babacan’s trip to Singapore included Hong Kong and took place on March 5-10. One of the main items on the agenda was the discussion with Singapore and Hong Kong on İstanbul’s plans to take its place among the top International Financial Centers (IFC) of the world. Hong Kong and Singapore are on the list of the world’s top IFCs; the Xinhua-Dow Jones International Financial Centers Development Index ranked Hong Kong as the fourth and Singapore as the fifth major IFC in 2011. Turkey is seeking new market opportunities for exports and has been looking to the East since Europe, to which Turkey sends 70 percent of its exports, began experiencing an economic slowdown. Ali Babacan, and his esteemed delegation of senior government officials from the Undersecretariat of Treasury and the Central Bank of Turkey joined the Turkey-Singapore Business Forum 2012 organized by Singapore Business Federation (SBF) and the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey and supported by STBA at Shangri-La Hotel on 9 March 2012
